PhotoGuide to the St Louis Arch (aka the Gateway National Expansion Memorial)
Location:
St Louis, MO
Features:
- All the Goosecrap you want (the park is covered in it)
- Airport-type security screening
Photo Equipment - what you should take:
- $5 for parking.
- A polarizing filter to darken the sky.
- A Neutral Density (ND) filter. This will be useful for long exposures in bright conditions.
- Take some slow film (ISO 50-100).
- A Tripod.
- As wide a lens as you have. All of the photos on this page were taken with a 24mm or longer lens.
Photo tips:
Stand at the base of the arch and look up.
Wait for night - it's now lighted.
My impressions and experiences:
Cool photo trip. Skip the trip to the top and go see the Imax movie about Louis and Clark. Better yet, just watch that cool projector. Wear boots if you plan to roam the grounds.
Go in the morning or evening for wonderful lighting on the surface of the arch.
Seasonal Update:
January, 2004: Everything covered in goose shit.
Brochures, maps and other publications:
None.
Other Attractions in the area:
St Louis Union Station
St Louis Metrolink
Lacledes Landing - Where uneven brick paved roads meet drunks on a nightly basis.
Dining:
Try the Hooters in Union Station. Only a $2.75 round-trip train ride on the Metrolink.
