PhotoGuide to Falling Spring and Turner Mill

Turner Mill and Falling Spring Waterfall

Location:

8-10 miles south of Eminence, MO on Hwy 19.

Features:

Here you'll find a 15-20 ft waterfall coming from the side of a cliff, over the water wheel of a small mill.  There's also a wooden footbridge across a lake to the mill and a log cabin.  Inside the mill are some cool gears.

Photo Equipment - what you should take:

  - A Telephoto lens is useful here as the only front view of the mill and spring is across a small fishing lake.

 - A polarizing filter will cut glare from the pond

 - Take a flash.  Everyone that I know that's tried to photograph the spring from behind the mill has wished they had a flash.

Photo tips:

 - Go there in the morning before sunrise.

 - Use a tripod.  It's only 20 ft from the car.

 - Use a fill flash and photograph the spring from behind the mill.

 - Since this is a fairly low volume waterfall, try using a slow (~1-3sec) shutter speed.

 - There's a wood crate at the bottom of the falls that (I think) used to be a part of the slough leading to the wheel.

Seasonal Info:

These photos were taken at the end of April, 2000.  There wasn't much foliage, and the pond was choked with this disgusting foliage stuff.  The months of June and July would probably be better, and fall months of Sept and October the best time to see this.

Update 6/2004:  Foliage is nice and green.  Waterflow is still low, even though it's been rainy.  Lots of mosquitos here this time of year.

My impressions and experiences:

It takes longer to find this place than to see it.  The turn from Hwy 19 is clearly marked, but the rest of the way isn't.  It's about 3 miles back a gravel road that forks a couple of times.  Trial and error got me there the first time.  I promise I'll make a map the next time I go here.

I got there at the worst possible time.  It was an hour before sunset and overcast.  As a result, I got nothing of significance in the way of photos.

Be sure to take bug spray.

Other Attractions in the area:

Greer Springs is about 2 miles south on Hwy 19.  It's a LOT more work than this place, though.

Rocky Falls is about 15 miles away and is a LOT cooler place than Greer.

Alley Spring and Mill is about 25 miles away and is also a lot easier than the Greer adventure.

Round Spring is about 20 miles North on Hwy 19.  Lots of otters at play if you have a 300-400mm lens to capture the action.

Dining:

There's a combination bait shop, wildlife checking station where they check to see that what you shot is what you think you shot (and you thought the tests ended after college - ha!), ammo shop, gas station and restaurant.  ColdBeerIceAmmoBaitFireworks, I think the name was.  I'd recommend passing this by and driving 60 miles north on Hwy 19 to the brand-new Denny's restaurant.
